![]() I walk straight past some farmers standing by a little body of water, and I see a hooded man standing outside of a building of some sort, a cat sitting nearby. I’m being thrown into something completely new to me, and I am soaking it all in. Here in Joppa I feel like I did when I was choosing my starter for the first time in Pokémon Blue, finally waking up on the cart in the intro of Skyrim, or surviving my first night in Minecraft. A friendly, warm guitar starts to play, and I hear a fire crackling, along with running water. The anticipation of adventure fills me as take in my surroundings. I wanted to find a game I could get lost in, and I found this one by simply giving myself permission to get lost in the Caves of Qud. I really wanted to jump into something new, I wasn’t worried about if it was was popular or if it was trending or whatever. I had been looking for a new adventure for a while now, something I could sink my teeth into. I threw it in the cart and purchased it, then started the download. Between that indicator and the two blurbs I read, I was willing to take a chance on the game. I didn’t read any of the reviews, but at a glance I could see that the reviews were ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’. For example, you can:Ĭlone yourself, mind-control the clone, and then hack off your own limbsīefore calling it done, we want to watch the community play Caves of Qud, and as the strange, unexpected stories of their characters unfold, we want to use them to refine the systems and make the game better. The world is expansive, the gameplay is unpredictable, and the plants are sentient. We’ve weaved a rich, exotic, and well-researched culture around deeply simulated physical and political systems. I head on over to its Steam Store page and read a short blurb that says:Ĭaves of Qud is a colossal project. Okay, that sounds pretty interesting to me. Come inhabit a layer cake of thousand-year-old civilizations in one of the weirdest and most immersive games of all time. Last chance to get the critically-acclaimed science fantasy RPG, Caves of Qud, before the price goes up next year. The first was the small ad on Blaseball site that said: I have a tiny idea of what I am jumping into, that idea comes from the two things I have read about the game. I have very limited information about Caves of Qud and the only ‘gameplay’ I’ve seen are what I can decipher from some brief glances at the screenshots on the Steam store page. This time, however, I have not done that. After all, with so many choices out there and only so much time, I want to make sure I am getting the best experience I can for the limited time and money that I do have. Like most people these days, I usually do some pretty extensive research into a game before deciding to pull the trigger on purchasing it. I purchased it after seeing it a week ago as the sponsor for Blaseball, and I downloaded the game to my Steam library that day, hoping that I would have time sometime soon to play it. It’s the first game I’ve purchased in a year, so here on Christmas Eve, I feel like a kid on a Christmas morning. Both of my kids are finally in bed, sound asleep, and the wife is is excited to sit down and watch a new show, allowing myself a rare opportunity to hop on my computer, and jump into a game I recently bought on a whim.
